It’s time for another transformation!! Meet Alex, we’ve loved watching Alex’s journey not just in beard growing but passion, knowledge and understanding of health, fitness and community. He’s built up to coaching some classes and we can’t wait to see where his journey will go in the next few years! Check out his story below.
I’ve been active all my life, as a child I played any sport I came across and this stuck with me into my teens. This sporty lifestyle coupled with my skinny build and poor diet meant that by the time I was 18 (picture 1) I only weighed around 8 stone. I was “fit” in that I could run for days but I was in no way healthy. From that point on I have been on a constant journey to “bulk up”.
Up until the age of 25 (picture 2) I regularly went to local commercial gyms, doing the standard bodybuilding “3 day split” and leaving the gym having barely broken into a sweat. Although some small gains were met to begin with, I plateaued early on and in the end was becoming bored with training completely.
That’s when Crossfit Ballymena came along! 🙌. Introduced to it by a friend, I was excited to learn a crossfit gym was coming to Ballymena and signed up right away to try something new. That was 3 years ago now and I’ve never looked back…
I love learning so many new skills and how varied the programming is, how personal the coaching is and the awesome community the gym has built. It has also given me a whole new perspective on health and fitness – I used to think the only way to gain muscle was through endless bicep curls with the odd deadlift thrown in and to NEVER do cardio. But I now see that it is the high variance of functional movements and intensity of the Crossfit model that built the foundations for me to become the strongest and fittest I have ever been. I have loved my time in crossfit and have even had the chance to compete in a few competitions (final pic – 12 stone). Although I still have some way to go to reach my goals I know crossfit has me on the right path.
