Starting at the end of February we have possibly the biggest social event of the year! THE OPEN! Keep an eye out for updates and for those who haven’t done it before we think you’ll love our team approach to this event.
We’ll be assigning a number of captains in the gym. Each captain will recruit members to their team so that everyone in the gym has the chance to be in a team. Each week for 5 weeks members will come together and do the open workout for that week and accumulate points. There will be a number of ways you can accumulate points and very few of them are in relation to ability! The team at the end of the 5 weeks with the most points will get a celebrity hosted BBQ just for them as a reward, those who were lucky enough to win last year will all agree…it was incredible!
We will divide the community up into teams. Each team will have a captain who will help organise, motivate and inspire each week. Every team will also have a coach assigned to keep the fitness side solid. We’ll run a Friday night lights event for 5 weeks starting the 22nd Feb and you’ll collect points for completing various challenges and tasks. The team with the most points win a private BBQ.
It’s time to meet your team captains, you’ll find out who your captain is in The Draft.
Most often seen in the 4.30pm class, she exemplifies the CrossFit method of mastering Nutrition as your base. Having one job isn’t hard enough so she does mountain rescue on the side…she is ruthless with partner stretches and can boss even the most manly men around. It’ll be hard to go wrong with Elizabeth in control.
One of our longest serving members, she’s tough, loves to yell and is a member of our gym mafia. Emma manages 5 businesses and is always one of the first to come and cheer you on at the end of a workout. Supportive, fiesty and fit, you’ll be glad she’s on your side.
Our Zumba master, Jo loves getting her groove on more so than fitness but being married to a coach she knows more than she lets on. Teaching and managing a year group at school isn’t enough so she also puts on a drama production each year too. Joining team Jo will be the party of the year!
Training in the testosterone filled 6am classes Pamela has effectively had a 2 year training camp turning her from small to MIGHTY. Raising kids, winning swimming leagues and keeping our future roads safe, I’m convinced she has a time turner. Pamela has all the inspiration you’ll need to succeed in the open.
The first big step in the journey to the open for our gym this year is going to be ‘The Draft’. This allows every member the opportunity to take part, remember invites can be turned down if you really don’t want to join in the fun. We would however ask you to take a minute to read the following if you’re considering turning down your invitation. At CrossFit Ballymena we REALLY appreciate that you trust us with your health and fitness. We always strive to create the best experience possible and we do this by building upon what we’ve done before. This year we’re trying something new with how teams are selected, unfortunately we biologically fear the unknown but trying new things is how we learn, improve and ultimately grow as individuals. We’d ask that you trust us with what we’re trying to do with the open but if you have any concerns come and speak face to face with Alex or JP about it. We believe this is going to be a massive success and look forward to seeing everyone step up to the challenge, build new friendships and learn from these new experiences.
We’ll be hosting The Draft on the 16th Feb after the 9.30am class. We’ll be streaming this live on Instagram and will try to do the same on the Facebook group. Everyones name will be in a container and the captains (or representatives) will draw names out then hunt those members down and recruit them to their team. This will allow a totally fair division of the gym so teams will have an equal chance of collecting points through The Open.
