The OPEN is coming up here’s all the info we’ve shared so far. This is going to be so much fun and Friday nights in the gym will be on FIRE! Each week for 5 weeks we will have a workout to complete. We’ll have team captains and they’ll invite your to their team.Each week for 5 weeks members will come together and do the open workout for that week and accumulate points. There will be a number of ways you can accumulate points and very few of them are in relation to ability!
After the 5 weeks, the team with the most points will be awarded medals and honoured with a team prize at our Christmas dinner.
For those looking to use the open workouts as tests of their current fitness, there will be movement challenges show up like;
Toes to bar
If you want to make sure you’re in the best possible shape for those, book in for a 30mins skill session with a coach!
We will divide the community up into three teams. Each team will have a captain who will help organise, motivate and inspire each week. Every team will also have a coach assigned to keep the fitness side solid. We’ll run a Friday night lights event for 5 weeks starting the 10th October you’ll collect points for completing various challenges and tasks. The team with the most points will receive not just bragging rights but some sweet prize wear.
The first big step in the journey to the open for our gym this year is going to be ‘The Draft’. This allows every member the opportunity to take part, remember invites can be turned down if you really don’t want to join in the fun. We would however ask you to take a minute to read the following if you’re considering turning down your invitation. At CrossFit Ballymena we REALLY appreciate that you trust us with your health and fitness. We always strive to create the best experience possible and we do this by building upon what we’ve done before. The 2019 Open saw some pretty big changes in how we ran this epic event and we were so pumped that all the members really got behind it as it turned out to be a great success. So this time around we’ll be keeping the format the same – the draft and the Friday night lights are here to stay!!!! We are looking forward to everyone getting involved again – if you have any concerns, please come and speak face to face with Alex or JP about it. We believe this is going to be a massive success again and look forward to seeing everyone step up to the challenge, build new friendships and learn from these new experiences.
We’ll be hosting The Draft on the 4th October during the PM schedule. We’ll be streaming this live on Instagram and will try to do the same on the Facebook group. Everyones name will be in a container and the captains (or representatives) will draw names out then hunt those members down and recruit them to their team. This will allow a totally fair division of the gym so teams will have an equal chance of collecting points through The Open.

So the teams are picked, Captains are coordinating and Coaches are there for guidance for fitnessey things. From a logistical point of view we’ll be using as much of the gym space as possible so we can efficiently get through the workouts without bloat time. We all want to be able to support our teammates and have an opportunity to judge and collect points but we don’t want things to drag on for hours on end. As such we’ll be utilising the Second gym area in Unit 11.
The workouts will run in heats and we’ll try to keep the changeover time to a minimum. Think 5 minutes. As such you need to be warmed up before your heat and you can use our second space for that. That way you can come over, meet your judge and go. If you’re looking to collect judging points doing so for the following wave(s) can really help the flow of the evening.
We know some won’t be able to commit to the full evening and that’s ok, make sure the heat coordinator knows you need to be done at a certain time and we’ll accommodate that to the best of our ability.
Lets run through a practical example.
Hypothetical Workout 19.1 is:
12min AMRAP of;
21 back squats 60/42.5kg
5 strict pull ups
In this case we know that each heat will last 12 mins. So a couple of heats before go next door, do some cossack squats, maybe some goblet or Sandbag squats. We’ll have the yoke and a barbell there too so you can try some of those out. Use the rings for some pull ups or ring rows. Basically get the body warm and sweaty, movements prepped and then LAYER UP and probably have a Pee break. Come over to catch the end of the heat before yours and as soon as they’re finished, find your station, your judge will find you and after a quick minute or two we’ll countdown 3-2-1…go.
It’s never too early to collect points for your team, entering the open online or completing the judges course can be fun Sunday afternoon activities. Coordinating squad photos/poses is essential for maximum selfie success.
